Stream: The Ross Sea Party – Two Things

It’s been more than a month since the release of Hotel Pool, the debut album from The Ross Sea Party. The album reeks of charm and sincerity with the kind of melodies that people make memories to. Now the band has decided to give away their second single off the release as a free download to their loyal fans and listeners.

“Two Things” is described as a crowd favorite at The Ross Sea Party live shows, and one listen should let you in on the secret of why. Is it possible for a song to be both relaxing and energetic? I would say no, but then again, “Two Things” just came across my iTunes and I can’t help but feeling a bit of both of those things. It begins in true pop fashion, with a joyful riff ripping through the track while the keys give a kind of gravitas to the song that I find interesting. Normally, it’s one or the other; the riff or the rich keys. Much like relaxing and energetic, though, The Ross Sea Party have found a way to make it work.

I’ll be honest, and I know some of you are turned off by this particular comparison, but…this track sounds like it could’ve been included on U2’s latest release No Line On The Horizon, and I mean that as a high compliment because I love U2. It has every bit of the joyful signature that U2 has when they really want to bring it and go that route – full of hope and wonder, as well as the bright, memorable riffage and vocals that sound amazing yet still have this interesting style that is almost like a man just talking to a crowd with a beautiful voice. It’s pretty swell stuff.

The Ross Sea Party are giving away “Two Things” for free on their Bandcamp (you can also purchase Hotel Pool in it’s entirety via their bandcamp) starting December 1st, along with behind the scenes footage from the making of Hotel Pool and an early peek at the next music video from the band that is coming in 2013.

Listen to “Two Things” below and let me know what you think.
