The 1975 are working on their debut LP and suddenly we get a new (or old?!) track that sounds…well, it seems to me “Sex” is a bit different than any of the previous The 1975 tracks I’ve received.
At it’s core, “Sex” it’s destined to be all over radio airwaves. It transports me back to the mainstream music scene of the early to mid 2000’s here in America; some would argue that maybe that’s not a kind comparison, but I relish the nostalgia. I’m not sure if this is what The 1975 were going for or if it’s a coincidence, but I can’t think of any argument for another track by this band that this straightforward and poppy.
As they were slowly releasing the tracks for their latest EP, IV, I found myself simultaneously intrigued and frustrated with the band. A few of the tracks had a huge draw, or gravitas…one or two were very atmospheric, almost the anti-thesis of the other singles (“Haunt//Bed” and “fallingforyou” spring to mind). Now adding “Sex” into the equation (with “Chocolate”), I don’t know what to make of the band. They are undeniably talented and quite capable of producing tracks that are irresistible, yet that’s not all they do.
Maybe the pop rock/pop punk sound of “Sex” will surprise you, or maybe you feel this is the actual The 1975 sound. I remain confused and intrigued.
