Sometimes I just look for different stuff. I’m sure you know what I mean. You get tired of the same old, same old, no matter how much you love it. I love McDonald’s food (yes, I just said that), but I don’t want to eat it every day. I love garage rock, but there’s only so many ways you can skin that cat. Sometimes you gotta branch out into unfamiliar territory and test the waters.
Enter Passenger Peru, originating from Brooklyn, NY. This project is a duo featuring Justin Stivers and Justin Gonzales and, well, their music is pretty interesting. They also happened to have sent their music to me on September 5th, 2012. That means they fell through the cracks, hit the bottom, found out the bottom was quicksand and subsequently got sucked into the void. Good news is they are back from the dead like Gandalf the White.
“Heavy Drugs” features a sickly sweet guitar riff, electronic sounds, reverb washed vocals that appear to have been washed in reverb a second time, and this kind of happy, hokey feeling that is really quite wonderful. I don’t know why I make this comparison, but this track of theirs reminds me of the Nickelodean TV classic Salute Your Shorts. It may be the refrain of “vacations over now”, or it may be I’m as weird as the Passenger Peru sound. You be the judge there.
I can’t get over the way “Heavy Drugs” seems like such a serious song, but that riff just “neener neener’s” right in the back and adds this whole element that is quite exquisite. There’s a little bit of everything here for everyone, even some shoegaze-y riffage going on.
VACATION IS OVER NOW…sorry Passenger Peru, for neglecting you on a Sirens of inbox vacation for almost 7 months. You deserve better. Enjoy this track folks, it’s a good one.
