“Neéd U” is incredibly relaxing – a pulsing journey deep into the sea, or maybe an aural representation of a gentle spin cycle on a pool sized washing machine. It’s hard to explain without hearing it, but the track combines everything great about muggy, rainy summer afternoons plus electronics and whispered vox to make your mind weave in and out of focus.
There seems to be a lot of this R&B+electronics-type sound rolling out now, artists following a bit on the heels/the blueprint of The Weeknd’s success. Some are quite similar, some take the sound or style in their own direction. There may be some listener fatigue from this trend in the future, I don’t know. I do know that in the past two months we’ve heard great tracks from Gallant, Jaymes Young, and Mali Michael to name a few. You can throw Oceaán in that list as well – another artist who has taken something great and given it his own flavor.
