I’ve written extensively about my love for Blazing Hips’ first single, and subsequent follow up “Cheetah”. I’ve since been a touch sad and in disbelief that “Wolf” didn’t catch on quite as well as I’d hoped. It’s still one of my favorite tracks of the year, and I’ve been waiting for Blazing Hips to drop another track since “Cheetah” came out in May.
Word has came into my inbox that there may be another new single in a month or so, but in the meantime Kelvin from Blazing Hips turned me on to something new. The guys behind Blazing Hips joined up with singer/songwriter Adam Oliver to create some new tunes under the aforementioned artists’ name. There’s four members in this group, including Bhips own Kelvin Stewart on guitar and keys. There’s also co-production from Nick Tashjian.
At first blush, I wasn’t sure if Adam Oliver was a person’s name or just an interestingly arrived upon band alias. It’s ultimately a futile question, as the track itself does enough justice for you to live with either outcome. “Outta My Head” is undeniably poppy – I’m particularly in love with the hole-in-the-wall sounding lo-fi vox, which provide a vintage touch and lovely refrain. Their Facebook quotes an anonymous observer of Adam Oliver remarking that the music is “a whirlwind of weed & red wine, California coastlines and hopeless romanticism.” I haven’t quite heard the hopeless romanticism, but rest assured all other accounts are justified.
Maybe you were waiting for Blazing Hips. Maybe you hated them. Either way, listen to Adam Oliver if you’re still in love with the beauty and simplicity of pop rock – you won’t be disappointed.
