U2 surprised millions of fans and my wallet by releasing the long, long awaited Songs of Innocence at the tail end of Apple’s latest announcement event. They did it for free, even. You can’t beat free, they say, and you sure as hell can’t beat free U2. They are one of my top three bands of all time. If you don’t like the pontificating Irishmen, you’ll probably wanna skip this post.
“The Troubles” is one of six tracks produced by Danger Mouse and the distinction is evident. The back half of Songs of Innocence is much stronger than the first bit, but towering above them all is the soulful track featuring vocal work from Lykke Li. While Bono intones great lines like “You think it’s easier/to put your finger on the trouble/when the trouble is you”, Lykke Li absolutely kills the chorus. Early returns say it’s one of my favorite modern U2 cuts.
If you were living under rocks, in a cave, or for some other reason did not know…all you need is an iTunes account to get Songs of Innocence for free. Welcome back, U2.
