“Barely Cared” begins with “I fall asleep in the day…”, a line that conjures up memories of my formative years spent working night shift and otherwise living like a nocturnal for months on end. In hindsight, it was a great time with little responsibilities and plenty of friends. At the time, however, it was a little depressing.
“Barely Cared” dives deep into that lonesome nostalgia, throwing you back into that timepiece where you’d drive for hours on end by yourself or with a friend just listening to tunes and complaining about the world at large. Hell, maybe that’s where you are now. Artifacts has nailed the sentiment to the ground, capturing the emotions in a beautiful lo-fi single that hits close to the heart.
Artifacts have taken everything and pared it back for a no frills slice of pop. Simple melodies combined with a just-sweet-enough lead guitar, catchy bass, and a dry, almost disinterested vocal delivery suit the message of “Barely Cared” so well it’s uncanny.
