Beginning with bright riffs, “Only Child” by Dead Owls goes in several directions I didn’t expect in it’s two and a half minutes. The majority of the track is basically folk rock, though it’s not the actual genre that the rest of the EP Small Talk would really fall into.
Dead Owls get real at times, with vocalist Jordan Tjhung channeling a bit of Manchester Orchestra’s Andy Hull during the rising chorus. It’s a pretty nice facet to add to this kind of track, which presents itself as easy listening and progresses into something with a good bit more punch. “Only Child” has some arena ready qualities, and the Dead Owls’ sound in general lies somewhere between indie rock and the more mainstream sound you’d hear on the radio.
In the end, it’s good pop rock delivered straight out of Perth. You can get the entire Small Talk EP on Bandcamp or download “Only Child” below.
