Face Off features two tracks, both unknown and unheard by myself. Did I mention these tracks are selected specifically because they encompass genres that I am ignorant of, or generally avoid? Well, there’s that too. Oh, and they are from the Hype Machine charts, so apparently they are fairly popular.
Face Off is meant to be a fun interlude in the seriousness of music blogging…if blogging can be called serious, which it cannot. I tackle songs I would never give a second thought, or delve into genres where I’d be better off sticking my own foot in my mouth than try to talk intelligently about them. Read and listen responsibly. Enjoy!
Lorde – “Million Dollar Bills (Easy Girl Remix)” (#18 RMX ONLY)
I’m an unabashed fan of Lorde. From the moment I laid ears on “Tennis Court” and “Royals” it was fairly evident she was destined for bigger things than being an indie blog darling. She’s in America now, blowing up fast. Before her popularity really explodes and the inevitable backlash commences (also inevitable), folks are still remixing, reworking, and reposting Lorde tracks like a man with a habit.
This remix by Easy Girl of “Million Dollar Bills” is a little more bombastic than anything I’ve heard officially from the Lorde camp, with thumping bass and an entirely extra minute added on for your consumption. It’s hard to mess up a Lorde remix and Easy Girl certainly hasn’t, as this one should be quite popular summer, winter, or on Mars.
Lady Gaga – “Applause” – Artpop (#10 NO RMX)
If you’re a fan or follower of this feature on Sirens of Decay, this is the kind of stuff you read for. You know, where I fall on my face trying to sound like I know what I’m talking about.
I do not know the slightest motherlovin’ thing about Lady Gaga. I’ve heard snippets of “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance”, but in general my experience with Lady Gaga has been from the ridiculous outfits and overall artsy image she projects. The common man thinks she’s a bit on the crazy side. I don’t know what I think as I’ve not paid a bit of attention, but hell, here we go.
“Applause” is almost too over the top, don’t you think? It has it’s hooks, no doubt, but it’s kind of an exemplary take on excess and fame in general it seems. She lives for the applause? I’m assuming she’s being both brutally honest and tongue in cheek…unfortunately I don’t know her character so I can’t make a real assessment. The chorus is as catchy as you would expect from a mainstream pop act, but I don’t feel this one is on the same level of attractiveness “Poker Face” or “Bad Romance” were. That could be intentional. It just seems like the further down the rabbit hole some artists go, the more they have going on in their music. For me, that’s not really a draw. I’m aware it is for others. We can agree to disagree, no?
I’m giving this one to the Lorde remix by Easy Girl, of course. As if there was any question. The Gaga’s, Perry’s, and whoever else’s should keep their eyes on her. She’s coming.
