Face Off: Round IX (MS MR’s “Hurricane” VS MØ’s “Pilgrim (MS MR Remix)”)

Face Off features two top ten tracks from the Hype Machine charts – both unknown and unheard by myself. Did I mention these tracks are selected specifically because they encompass genres that I am ignorant of, or generally avoid? Well, there’s that too.

Face Off is meant to be a fun interlude in the seriousness of music blogging…if blogging can be called serious, which it cannot. I tackle songs I would never give a second thought, or delve into genres where I’d be better off sticking my own foot in my mouth than try to talk intelligently about them.  Read and listen responsibly. Enjoy!

MS MR – “Hurricane” – Secondhand Rapture (stream) (pre-order) #3 on no remix charts

Getting aboard the way back machine, “Hurricane” is a track that first surfaced over a year ago. I blissfully operated Sirens of Decay that entire time…never encountering MS MR at any point. At least, never encountering them until CHVRCHES decided to remix “Hurricane”. That was an eye opener, but also mildly hilarious because I had never heard the original until the night the remix premiered.

As I ran down the list for Face Off original tracks that I could use this week, it came down to “Ya Hey” by Vampire Weekend and “Hurricane”. I love “Ya Hey”, but it felt like time to deliver some just desserts to a group I had neglected for far too long. “Hurricane” is a hell of a pop track – it’s best feature is that it unfolds more like a slowly encroaching thunderstorm. It’s not quick, it’s arguably stately, but it is beautiful.

Hype Machine is streaming MS MR’s album Secondhand Rapture so that you can get your fill of the group, along with “Hurricane”. Just click those links above.

MØ – “Pilgrim” (MS MR Remix) – #10 on remix only charts

It wouldn’t be a real face off without two tracks from the same group, right? MS MR competes against themselves this week with their remix of MØ’s “Pilgrim”.

I would characterize the original as sultry and this remix as dirty. One is the look, the other the deed, and this remix is most definitely the deed. It’s a great remix, but I’m not sure I love it more than I like the original “Pilgrim”. It’s a bit of a toss up, really, and since it is that means only one thing…

This is the week “Hurricane” wipes out “Pilgrim (MS MR Remix)”. If we were going original versus original, though…
