Double Take features two top ten tracks from the Hype Machine charts – both unknown and unheard by myself. Did I mention these tracks are selected specifically because they encompass genres that I am ignorant of, or generally avoid? Well, there’s that too.
Double Take is meant to be a fun interlude in the seriousness of music blogging…if blogging can be called serious. I tackle songs I would never otherwise give a second thought, or delve into genres where I’d be better off sticking my own foot in my mouth than try to talk intelligently about them. Read and listen responsibly. Enjoy!
Ancient Astronauts – “Break My Heart In 2” – Ranked #6 on Hype Machine no remix charts
This will be the first honest to goodness time I’ve done this with Double Take…but holy shit, this song is amazing. I found this via Earmilk on the charts – apparently these Earmilk fellas/gals are the only ones who bothered to show Ancient Astronauts any love. I can’t fathom the reason for that, but hey Ancient Astronauts, I got plenty of room for you in my collection right next to Astronauts, etc!
Earmilk described this track as speaking “to their futuristic vintage persona, which is always coupled with hip-hop and downtempo aspects.” That’s a pretty good summation. Basically, you’ve got the kind of old school hip-hop beats I love – without all the flash and drops, just sweet ass grooves, combined with some amazing brass and vocals that sound as though they are (likely) a sample. I don’t know what more to say than that.
This is by far and away my favorite Double Take track and I cannot recommend it enough. “Break My Heart In 2” is dripping with charm and a healthy dose of good weather fun. I’d be shocked if you can’t jam to this.
Amazing job Hype Machine listeners. A true gem.
Woodkid – “Boat Song” (Kulkid Remix) – Ranked #6 on the Hype Machine remix charts
I am not wholly unfamiliar with Woodkid. I did listen to “Iron” quite heavily ages ago (try April of 2011), but that was the first and last thing I heard from this dude.
That makes me kind of sad because he just released his first album, The Golden Age, and I haven’t even gotten a chance to touch it. Such is the life of music blogging. Great things show up, take your heart, and then they disappear and sometimes you miss them when they come back again. It’s not unlike being an astronomer and watching for meteors and comets. Some have a bigger flash than others, some explode, some only happen once in a life, and some put out an album two years later and you don’t get your ears on it in a timely fashion.
Kulkid’s remix of “Boat Song” is actually pretty good. I really think you could take anything with Woodkid’s vocals and make it a gem. His tone has this darkness to it, yet it remains soothing to the ears. Haunted, I guess you’d say.
This track is far from haunting though – it’s also primed for summer.
I’ll give this a decent job, Hype Machine listeners. Kulkid did well.
This week’s winner is obviously “Break My Heart In 2”. I dunno how you can deny that amazing sound. Woodkid is awesome and the remix is pretty grand…but holy wow.
