Double Take features two top ten tracks from the Hype Machine charts – both unknown and unheard by myself. Did I mention these tracks are selected specifically because they encompass genres that I am ignorant of, or generally avoid? Well, there’s that too.
Double Take is meant to be a fun interlude in the seriousness of music blogging…if blogging can be called serious. I tackle songs I would never otherwise give a second thought, or delve into genres where I’d be better off sticking my own foot in my mouth than try to talk intelligently about them. Read and listen responsibly. Enjoy!
Daft Punk – Get Lucky (Radio Edit) – Random Access Memories (Amazon buy link) – ranked #1 on Hype Machine no remix list
I’m gonna do some blaspheming right now so get those pitchforks ready. I’m not a big Daft Punk fan. I know maybe 5-7 of their tracks well enough to recognize and the rest I’ve just never gotten behind. This all goes back to (once great) divide on Sirens between featured rock music versus electronic. That divide may have even swapped the other way now, but unfortunately a tad too late for past Daft Punk releases, no?
So “Get Lucky” features Pharrell Williams, for whatever reason, and Jesus Christ is folks weren’t all over this release/leak like flies to honey. I’m personally unsure what to think. The sounds are particularly catchy, though I’ve never been a huge fan of Pharrell. It’s not a bad track, but it does seem to be missing that one final thing that makes it great. The vox seem to be missing something, not in the mix right or something.
For my part, I love the chorus. It’s catchy and there’s no denying it’s charm – you will be repeating this shit religiously if this is your kind of jam.
Pretty good job Hype Machine and rest of the world. Everyone but me loves Daft Punk. Guess I’ll join in the fun.

Daft Punk – Get Lucky (Cat5 Edit) – Ranked #10 on Hype Machine remix only list
In a Double Take first, we have the opportunity to pit the original against a remix of said version due to both tracks major exposure on the blogosphere. Funny enough, the “Get Lucky (Cat5 Edit)” version is actually even better…at least for this intrepid blogger. I love the cassette tape sound, or straight to tape, whatever you want to call it – the flange makes it pretty sweet.
I prefer the vocal work in the original, but the slight touches of Cat5 to the snippet he used for this “Get Lucky” remix are superb. I feel like some combination of the two would be best, but hey that’s why we have remixes, right? I’m sure someone will remix the full version within a day or two and steal our hearts again.
Great work Cat5 and Hype Machine.
This weeks winner is everyone. And so my ignorance is slightly less than last week.
